The phoenix is a bird from Phoenician mythology that has beautiful flame-hued plumage. When the phoenix neared its death, it built itself a nest of cinnamon twigs and lit it alight. The nest and bird then both caught flame, eventually leaving only ashes. From these ashes, a new baby phoenix was born. The phoenix's song and tears supposedly also had magical properties.
